7050 Clad (Alclad) T76 aluminum alloy belongs to the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu based 7000 series and is a high-strength alloy coated with a layer of pure aluminum. This cladding significantly improves corrosion resistance while the core material provides high mechanical strength. The T76 temper includes solution heat treatment, stress relieving, and overaging, specifically designed to enhance resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
In terms of corrosion resistance, 7050 Clad T76 performs significantly better than unclad 7050 alloy. The Alclad layer provides galvanic protection on the surface, greatly improving corrosion resistance especially in atmospheric and humid environments. Its SCC resistance is also very high due to the T76 temper and offers a clear advantage over 7075-T6. Therefore, it is widely used in aerospace applications.
Regarding strength and mechanical properties, 7050 Clad T76 offers very high strength, although slightly lower than T6 or T7451 tempers. In return, toughness and resistance to crack propagation are significantly improved. Compared to 2024 alloy, it provides higher strength and better damage tolerance. The cladding layer has minimal effect on overall strength but significantly enhances surface performance.
In terms of machinability, bendability, and weldability, 7050 Clad T76 provides moderate machinability. Machining is possible but not as easy as with 6000 series alloys. Its weldability is limited and it is generally not preferred for welded applications. Its bending capability is low, and forming operations are typically performed before heat treatment. Similar to 7050 and 7075 alloys, it is mainly used in machined and forged products.
Regarding coating ability, vibration behavior, and applications, 7050 Clad already includes a surface protection layer, reducing the need for additional coatings in many cases, although extra protection may still be applied. Its vibration damping capacity is low. Main application areas include aerospace industry, aircraft fuselage panels, wing skins, and high-reliability structural components. 7050 Clad T76 is especially preferred in applications requiring both high strength and maximum corrosion resistance.
