5086 H112 aluminum alloy is a magnesium (Mg) containing alloy belonging to the 5xxx series, known for its high corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties. This alloy stands out particularly due to its superior corrosion resistance against seawater and aggressive environments. It provides long-term durability in saltwater, humid atmospheres, and chemically exposed environments. Compared to pure aluminum, it offers significantly higher strength while maintaining good formability.

In terms of strength, 5086 H112 is classified as a medium-to-high strength alloy and is preferred especially in structural applications. Compared to 5052 alloy, it provides higher strength and better structural performance. When compared to 6061-T6 alloy, it has lower strength but significantly better corrosion resistance. Compared to 5083 alloy, it generally offers slightly lower strength but better formability and machinability.

In terms of machinability, 5086 H112 alloy is moderate; it is not one of the best alloys for machining, but it can be easily processed in sheet and plate form. Its bending capability is very good, allowing the production of complex geometries with low risk of cracking. It is highly suitable for cold forming processes, providing a significant advantage especially in shipbuilding and large structural component production.

In terms of coating capability, 5086 H112 performs well, although in most applications additional coating is not required due to its natural corrosion resistance. However, painting, anodizing, and other surface treatments can be applied. In terms of vibration response, it offers good energy damping properties, making it advantageous in environments with dynamic loads and vibrations.

Its weldability is very high and it can be easily welded using common methods such as MIG and TIG. It largely retains its mechanical properties after welding. The 5086 H112 alloy is widely used in applications such as shipbuilding, marine equipment, defense industry, pressure vessels, and heavy transport systems. It stands out especially in applications requiring high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and good formability.
