6262 T9 aluminum alloy belongs to the Al-Mg-Si based 6000 series and is a free-machining alloy specifically developed for applications requiring high machinability. Elements such as lead (Pb) and bismuth (Bi) in its composition facilitate chip breaking, providing superior performance in CNC and automatic lathe operations. The T9 temper indicates a combination of solution heat treatment, cold working, and artificial aging, which increases the strength while achieving a certain hardness level.
In terms of corrosion resistance, 6262 T9 generally exhibits the typical characteristics of the 6000 series and performs well in atmospheric environments. However, due to its free-machining additive elements, its corrosion resistance is slightly lower compared to alloys such as 6061 and 6082. Nevertheless, it is sufficient for most industrial environments and can be further improved with appropriate surface treatments.
Regarding strength and mechanical properties, 6262 T9 has a medium-to-high strength level. It offers mechanical properties close to 6061-T6 but does not reach the strength level of 6082-T651. Compared to 7075-T6, it has significantly lower strength. However, it provides a good balance of hardness and sufficient strength, making it suitable for precision-machined parts.
In terms of machinability, bendability, and weldability, the most prominent advantage of 6262 T9 is its very high machinability. Chip breaking is excellent and tool wear is low, which provides a major advantage in mass production. However, its weldability is limited and it is generally not preferred for welding applications. Its bending capability is also low due to the T9 temper, so forming operations should be carried out in softer tempers. Compared to 6061 and 6082, it is superior in machinability, and it is also much more advantageous than 7075 in this regard.
Regarding coating ability, vibration behavior, and applications, 6262 alloy is suitable for anodizing and coating processes, although surface quality may be limited in decorative applications due to its composition. Its vibration damping capacity is moderate. Main application areas include automotive, defense industry, hydraulic and pneumatic fittings, fasteners, screws, and precision-machined mechanical components. 6262 is an ideal solution especially for applications requiring high-speed machining in mass production.
