7050 T74511 aluminum alloy belongs to the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu based 7000 series and represents a temper condition optimized particularly for extrusion products. The T74511 temper includes solution heat treatment, controlled overaging, and stretching/straightening processes. This temper provides high strength along with improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), making it suitable for aerospace and high-reliability structural applications.
In terms of corrosion resistance, 7050 T74511 offers strong performance within the 7000 series. Its resistance to stress corrosion cracking is significantly higher than that of 7075-T6. Thanks to the T74511 temper, SCC resistance is substantially improved compared to the T6 condition. However, its general corrosion resistance is lower than that of 6000 series alloys, and surface protection is recommended in aggressive environments.
Regarding strength and mechanical properties, 7050 T74511 provides very high strength, close to that of 7075. While it shows similar mechanical properties to T7451, it offers better dimensional stability in extrusion products. Compared to the T6 temper, strength is slightly reduced, while toughness and crack propagation resistance are significantly improved. Compared to 2024 alloy, it offers higher strength and better damage tolerance.
In terms of machinability, bendability, and weldability, 7050 T74511 has moderate machinability. Machining is possible but not as easy as with 6000 series alloys. Its weldability is limited and it is generally not preferred for welded applications. Its bending capability is low, and forming operations are typically performed before heat treatment. It provides advantages in dimensional stability due to its use in extrusion products.
Regarding coating ability, vibration behavior, and applications, 7050 alloy is suitable for anodizing and protective coatings, although its decorative surface quality is limited. Its vibration damping capacity is low. Main application areas include aerospace industry, extrusion structural profiles, aircraft framework components, military systems, and high load-bearing structural parts. 7050 T74511 is especially preferred in extrusion applications where both high strength and SCC resistance are required.
