7012 T6 aluminum alloy belongs to the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu based 7000 series and is developed for applications requiring high strength. This alloy stands out by offering a combination of high strength and good machinability. The T6 temper refers to solution heat treatment and artificial aging, providing maximum strength. It has strength levels similar to 7075-T6 while offering better machinability advantages in certain applications.
In terms of corrosion resistance, 7012 T6 exhibits typical characteristics of the 7000 series and provides moderate corrosion resistance. Its resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is lower than T7 tempers and behaves similarly to 7075-T6. Compared to 6000 series alloys such as 6082 or 6061, its corrosion resistance is lower, therefore surface coatings or anodizing are recommended.
Regarding strength and mechanical properties, 7012 T6 offers very high strength levels, close to 7075-T6. It provides significantly higher strength compared to 2024 alloy. However, in exchange for high strength, toughness and SCC resistance are more limited compared to T7 tempers. Therefore, it is suitable for high load-bearing applications in controlled environments.
In terms of machinability, bendability, and weldability, 7012 T6 provides good machinability and may offer advantages over 7075 in this aspect. Machining operations can be carried out efficiently. However, its weldability is limited and it is generally not preferred for welded applications. Its bending capability is low, and forming operations are typically performed before heat treatment.
Regarding coating ability, vibration behavior, and applications, 7012 alloy is suitable for anodizing and protective coatings. Its decorative surface quality is limited, but performance can be enhanced with functional coatings. Its vibration damping capacity is low. Main application areas include defense industry, automotive, machinery manufacturing, and high-strength mechanical components. 7012 T6 is preferred especially in applications requiring a combination of high strength and machinability.
