The 2017A aluminum alloy, especially in the T4510 and T4511 temper conditions, is an Al-Cu (aluminum-copper) series alloy developed for applications requiring high strength and good machinability. This alloy is known for its high tensile strength and yield strength, while also offering a balanced toughness and fatigue resistance. It is particularly preferred in areas where mechanical performance requirements are high.
The corrosion resistance of the 2017A alloy is at a moderate level and in this respect is lower than the 6061 alloy, but more balanced compared to some high-strength alloys. For this reason, it is generally supported with surface treatments (anodic oxidation or coating). Its coating capability is quite good and it is especially suitable for anodizing processes. However, its weldability is poor, which makes it more suitable for machining rather than welded constructions.
In terms of machinability, 2017A-T4510/T4511 alloys are quite advantageous and provide high chip removal performance similar to 2007 and 2011 alloys. For this reason, it is widely used in the production of precision parts in the automotive, machinery and aerospace sectors. In addition, its vibration damping capability is an important feature that makes it preferable in some applications.
The bending and formability of this alloy are limited and, due to its high strength, are lower compared to more ductile alloys such as 5052. Therefore, it is not suitable for complex forming operations. However, it provides advantages in applications requiring rigidity and dimensional stability.
Its areas of use include aerospace equipment, automotive parts, machine elements and fastening elements. The 2017A alloy offers better machinability compared to 7075 alloy, but lower strength; while compared to 2024 alloy, it provides similar strength but better machinability. Thanks to these balanced properties, it has a wide range of use in engineering applications.
