5086 H22 aluminum alloy is a magnesium (Mg) containing alloy belonging to the 5xxx series in a strain-hardened and partially annealed (quarter-hard) temper condition. The H22 temper provides lower strength compared to H32 but better formability. This alloy stands out with its superior corrosion resistance, especially in aggressive environments, and can be safely used in seawater, humid atmospheres, and chemical environments. Compared to pure aluminum, it provides higher strength while maintaining good formability.
In terms of strength, 5086 H22 offers lower strength than H32 and H321 tempers but higher strength than the O temper. Compared to 5052 H22 alloy, it provides higher strength and better performance in marine environments. When compared to 5083 H111 alloy, it offers lower strength but better formability. Compared to 6061-T6 alloy, it has lower strength but significantly better corrosion resistance.
In terms of machinability, 5086 H22 alloy is moderate; it is not ideal for machining but can be easily processed in sheet and plate form. Its bending capability is better than H32 temper and has a lower risk of cracking. Therefore, it is preferred in applications requiring moderate strength but important formability. It provides a balanced performance for cold forming operations.
In terms of coating capability, 5086 H22 performs well and is suitable for surface treatments such as painting and anodizing. However, in most cases, coating is not mandatory due to its natural corrosion resistance. In terms of vibration response, it offers good energy damping capacity and can be used in systems with dynamic loads.
Its weldability is very high and it can be easily welded using methods such as MIG and TIG. There may be limited reductions in mechanical properties after welding, but overall performance is maintained. The 5086 H22 alloy is widely used in applications such as shipbuilding, marine equipment, structural panels, transport systems, and applications requiring moderate strength. It stands out especially in applications requiring corrosion resistance, formability, and balanced strength.
