5086 H116 aluminum alloy is a magnesium (Mg) containing material from the 5xxx series, specifically optimized for marine applications. The H116 temper is developed to provide controlled mechanical properties and high resistance to stress corrosion cracking in marine environments. This alloy is particularly superior in terms of corrosion resistance and demonstrates long-term durability in seawater, saline atmospheres, and aggressive chemical environments. Therefore, it is widely preferred in ship structures and offshore equipment.
In terms of strength, 5086 H116 provides medium-to-high strength. Compared to 5083 H116, it has slightly lower strength but offers similar corrosion resistance. When compared to 5052 H32, it provides significantly higher strength and better marine performance. Compared to 6061-T6, although it has lower strength, it offers much better corrosion resistance and especially superior post-weld performance.
In terms of machinability, 5086 H116 alloy is moderate; it is limited for machining but can be easily processed in sheet and plate form. Its bending capability is very good, and due to its high ductility, the risk of cracking is low. This makes it suitable for large panels and complex geometries. Its cold forming performance is balanced and reliable.
In terms of coating capability, 5086 H116 alloy shows good performance. Anodizing can be applied, but decorative appearance is more limited compared to 5005 alloy. It is suitable for painting and other surface treatments. Additionally, it provides good damping capability in terms of vibration response, especially beneficial in marine structures.
Its weldability is very high and high-quality welds can be achieved using methods such as MIG and TIG. Strength loss after welding is low. This feature provides an important advantage in large structural applications. The 5086 H116 alloy is widely used in sectors such as shipbuilding, offshore structures, pressure vessels, defense industry, marine transport equipment, and heavy industry. It stands out especially in applications requiring both high corrosion resistance and good mechanical performance.
