7175 T73511 aluminum alloy belongs to the 7xxx series Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys and was developed to provide an excellent balance between high strength and improved corrosion resistance. The alloy is typically produced in extruded forms, and the T73511 temper indicates a stress-relieved condition with overaging treatment that improves resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). 7175 alloy exhibits high strength properties comparable to 7075 and 7050 alloys, while in some applications it can offer better resistance to stress corrosion.
In terms of mechanical properties, 7175 T73511 provides very high ultimate tensile strength and yield strength. Its strength level is typically similar to 7075, and in some tempers it can even be higher than 7050. Compared with 2024 or 6061 alloys, it offers significantly higher strength levels. Because of these properties, the alloy is widely used in load-bearing structural components. It also demonstrates excellent fatigue resistance and mechanical stability under vibration, making it reliable in applications involving dynamic loads.
Regarding corrosion resistance, the 7175 T73511 temper offers a microstructure designed to improve resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). While 7075-T6 alloy may be more susceptible to SCC due to its high strength condition, 7175-T73511 reduces this risk through overaging heat treatment. Although 7050 alloy also provides strong SCC resistance, 7175 may exhibit better surface stability and coating compatibility in some conditions. The alloy is also well suited for anodizing, painting, and other protective surface coatings.
From a machinability perspective, 7175 aluminum alloy offers good machinability among high-strength aluminum alloys. During machining operations, stable chip formation and good surface finish can be achieved. However, formability and bending capability are limited, as is typical for high-strength 7xxx alloys, and forming is often performed before the final temper condition. Weldability is limited, and similar to most Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys, mechanical fastening methods are generally preferred over welding.
7175 T73511 aluminum alloy is widely used in aerospace and defense industries. Typical applications include aircraft wing structures, structural extrusions, fittings, and high-strength load-bearing components. It is also used in high-performance transportation systems, racing vehicles, and certain space applications. Compared with 7075, 7050, and 2024 alloys, 7175 offers an advantageous combination of high strength, corrosion resistance, and fatigue performance, making it a strong candidate for critical structural components.
