The 2024 T81 aluminum alloy is a copper-based (Al-Cu) alloy developed for applications requiring high strength. This alloy is strengthened through precipitation hardening and can achieve very high tensile and yield strength values. The T81 temper is obtained through a combination of solution heat treatment, cold working, and artificial aging. As a result, 2024 alloy performs exceptionally well in environments with high static and dynamic loads.
Corrosion resistance is one of the weaker aspects of the 2024 T81 alloy. Due to its high copper content, it is susceptible to atmospheric and galvanic corrosion; therefore, alclad coating or anodizing is typically applied. On the other hand, its strength-to-weight ratio is extremely high, making it indispensable in aerospace and defense industries. Under vibration, it offers good fatigue resistance, but care must be taken regarding surface defects.
In terms of machinability, the 2024 T81 alloy performs very well and provides stable results in machining processes. However, bending and formability are limited due to the hardness of the T81 temper; forming operations are usually performed in T3 or O temper. Weldability is poor; there is a high tendency for cracking during fusion welding, so riveting and mechanical fastening are more commonly used.
Coatability and surface treatments play a critical role in the use of this alloy. Alclad coating increases corrosion resistance by adding a pure aluminum layer to the surface. Additionally, anodizing can improve surface hardness and wear resistance. Under vibration and impact loads, the alloy shows good energy absorption, but regular inspection is required to prevent microcrack formation.
The 2024 T81 alloy is widely used in aerospace, automotive, and defense industries. It is commonly used in aircraft fuselage panels, wing structures, and high-strength fasteners. Compared to 7075-T6, 2024 offers better fatigue resistance, while 7075 provides higher strength. Compared to 6061-T6, 2024 offers much higher strength but lower corrosion resistance and weldability. Compared to 5083 alloy, 5083 has better corrosion resistance and weldability, while 2024 provides significantly higher mechanical strength.
