2219 T3511 aluminum alloy is an Al-Cu (aluminum-copper) alloy developed for applications requiring high strength and especially high-temperature performance. This alloy is widely preferred in the aerospace industry and offers moderate corrosion resistance, though not as high as pure aluminum or 5xxx series alloys. Its corrosion resistance is typically enhanced through surface treatments such as anodizing or coating. Its ability to retain mechanical properties at elevated temperatures makes it ideal for rocket fuel tanks and structural components.
In terms of strength, 2219 T3511 provides high yield and tensile strength due to precipitation hardening. It stands out among 2000 series alloys with its superior high-temperature strength. For example, while 2024 alloy provides high strength at room temperature, 2219 performs more reliably at elevated temperatures. Although 7075 alloy offers higher strength, its weldability is poor; in this regard, 2219 provides a more balanced alternative. Meanwhile, 6061 alloy has lower strength but better overall corrosion resistance and machinability.
Regarding machinability and bending properties, 2219 T3511 has moderate machinability. The T3511 temper provides a stress-relieved and straightened structure, ensuring stability during machining operations. However, due to its high strength, its bending capability is limited, and forming operations are usually performed in softer tempers. In contrast, alloys like 5052 offer much better bendability, while 2219 is preferred for applications requiring structural strength.
In terms of coatability and weldability, 2219 alloy is highly advantageous. It is one of the best weldable alloys within the 2000 series and can be successfully joined using TIG/MIG welding methods. This makes it widely used in cryogenic tanks and pressure vessels. Its coatability is also good, and surface treatments can further enhance its performance. Compared to 7075 alloy, which has very poor weldability, 2219 has a significant advantage in this area.
Regarding vibration response and applications, 2219 T3511 offers good fatigue resistance and vibration damping capacity. These properties make it widely used in aerospace, defense, space, cryogenic storage systems, and high-temperature equipment. Its use in rocket structures by NASA demonstrates its reliability. Compared to 2024 and 7075 alloys, it offers better weldability and high-temperature resistance, while providing higher strength than 6061.
