The 2017 T651 aluminum alloy belongs to the Al-Cu-Mg (aluminum-copper-magnesium) series and is a wrought alloy developed for high-strength applications. The T651 temper includes solution heat treatment followed by stress relieving and artificial aging, improving dimensional stability. In terms of strength, the 2017 alloy offers significantly higher strength than 6061, while providing slightly lower but more balanced mechanical properties compared to 7075.
Corrosion resistance of the 2017 alloy is moderate and requires additional protection, especially in marine environments. Therefore, anodizing or coating processes are commonly applied. In terms of coatability, it is suitable for surface treatments, but due to its copper content, it requires more care compared to 6xxx series alloys. Compared to the 2024 alloy, it shows similar corrosion behavior, while 6061 performs better in this aspect.
In terms of machinability, 2017 T651 performs very well and is one of the preferred alloys for machining. It is especially suitable for precision machining in automotive and aerospace components. Although 7075 also offers good machinability, 2017 may provide advantages with lower tool wear. Bending and formability are limited due to the T651 temper and it is not very suitable for cold forming.
Weldability is one of the weak points of this alloy. Due to its high copper content, there is a high risk of cracking after welding, and mechanical fastening methods are generally preferred. In this respect, 6061 alloy has much better weldability. Vibration and fatigue behavior of the 2017 alloy is good, showing resistance to dynamic loading conditions.
Applications include aerospace parts, automotive components, machine elements, and structural applications requiring high strength. It is commonly used alongside 2024 and 7075 alloys in aircraft structures. While 6061 is more widely used in general engineering applications, the 2017 alloy stands out in cases requiring a balance of machinability and strength.
