7020 T6 aluminum alloy belongs to the Al-Zn-Mg based 7000 series and is one of the few alloys offering high strength along with good weldability. The T6 temper refers to solution heat treatment and artificial aging, providing maximum strength. Due to its low copper content, 7020 stands out within the 7000 series for welded structures and differs from alloys such as 7010 and 7075.

In terms of corrosion resistance, 7020 T6 provides good performance within the 7000 series, although its resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is lower than overaged tempers such as T7351. However, it offers a more balanced corrosion behavior compared to 7075-T6. Compared to 6000 series alloys, its corrosion resistance is slightly lower, therefore surface protection is recommended.

Regarding strength and mechanical properties, 7020 T6 offers high strength and significantly exceeds 6082-T6. However, it remains below alloys such as 7075 and 7010. In return, it provides better toughness and impact resistance, offering a more balanced mechanical performance. Compared to 2024, it has advantages in both strength and corrosion resistance.

In terms of machinability, bendability, and weldability, 7020 T6 provides moderate machinability. Machining is possible but not as good as 7012 or 7075. Its weldability is very good, making it stand out within the 7000 series. It can be welded using MIG and TIG methods with limited strength loss after welding. Its bending capability is lower compared to T4.

Regarding coating ability, vibration behavior, and applications, 7020 alloy is suitable for anodizing and protective coatings. Its decorative surface quality is moderate. Its vibration damping capacity is slightly better than typical 7000 series alloys. Main application areas include railway systems, automotive chassis, defense industry, welded constructions, and heavy-duty equipment. 7020 T6 is an ideal alloy for applications requiring both high strength and weldability.
