7075 T4 aluminum alloy is a high-strength aluminum alloy widely used in aerospace, defense, and engineering applications that require high performance. The 7075 alloy belongs mainly to the 7xxx series of aluminum alloys and contains a high amount of zinc; magnesium and copper additions provide excellent mechanical properties. The T4 temper condition is achieved through solution heat treatment and natural aging; this gives the material high formability and allows the strength levels to be increased later through heat treatments such as T6 or T73.

In terms of strength, the 7075 T4 alloy is quite strong. In the T4 condition, the tensile strength is generally in the range of 400–450 MPa, and the yield strength is 250–300 MPa. These values make the alloy suitable for medium to high load applications. However, the T4 condition does not provide as high strength as T6; in return, it offers better formability and machinability. Therefore, T4 is preferred for parts that will later be shaped, bent, or subjected to heat treatment.

In terms of formability and machinability, 7075 T4 alloy is easier to machine compared to other 7xxx series alloys. Good results can be achieved in drilling, milling, and turning operations. However, due to its high zinc content, in some cases, it is important to select the correct cutting speeds and tools to achieve proper chip formation. Overall, the T4 temper provides better machinability compared to T6.

Corrosion resistance of 7075 T4 alloy is moderate. The alloy provides some resistance to atmospheric conditions; however, for long-term use in salty or marine environments, additional surface protection or anodizing may be required. Therefore, the alloy is generally used in aircraft structures, automotive parts, and lightweight structural components, but extra protective measures are necessary if it will be used directly in marine environments.

Applications include aircraft fuselage and wing components in the aerospace sector, lightweight and high-strength structural components in space and defense industries, chassis and body parts in high-performance vehicles, and sports and recreational equipment. The combination of high strength and sufficient machinability makes engineers frequently choose 7075 T4 alloy for projects requiring flexible design.
