The 2017A T3510 aluminum alloy is a high-strength wrought alloy belonging to the Al-Cu (aluminum-copper) series and is preferred especially in high-performance applications such as aerospace and defense industries. The T3510 temper includes solution heat treatment, stress relieving, and natural aging processes, providing a balanced mechanical strength and dimensional stability. This alloy is widely used in structural components requiring high load-bearing capacity.

One of the most notable properties of the alloy is its high strength and particularly good fatigue resistance. However, as common in 2000 series alloys, corrosion resistance is limited, and therefore it generally requires surface treatments (such as anodizing or coating). Its coating capability is good, which provides an advantage in extending service life. Compared to 2024 alloy, it has similar strength levels while offering better machinability in some cases.

In terms of machinability, 2017A performs very well especially in T3510 temper and is suitable for machining operations. In this respect, it offers better machinability than 2014 alloy, but lower corrosion resistance than 6061 alloy. Its bending (forming) capability is moderate, and due to its high strength, forming processes require attention. Additionally, it shows good vibration damping capacity, which is advantageous in applications with dynamic loads.

Weldability of 2017A alloy is considered poor, therefore riveting or mechanical fastening methods are usually preferred. This is a disadvantage compared to 6061 alloy, which has excellent weldability. However, compared to 7075 alloy, 2017A offers better machinability and slightly better ductility, although 7075 has higher strength.

Overall, 2017A T3510 is an alloy that provides high strength, good machinability, and moderate formability. It is used in aerospace, automotive, machinery manufacturing, and military applications. Compared to 2024, 2014, and 7075 alloys, it offers a favorable performance-cost balance. However, due to its low corrosion resistance and poor weldability, it should be used with appropriate surface treatments and design approaches.
