2007 T3510 aluminum alloy is a high-strength wrought aluminum alloy based on the Al-Cu-Mg-Pb system and is specifically developed for applications requiring excellent machinability. The copper content provides high mechanical strength, while lead and bismuth additions improve chip formation, enabling superior performance in machining operations such as turning and milling. The T3510 temper indicates that the alloy has been solution heat treated, stress relieved, and stabilized to achieve dimensional stability. This makes it suitable for precision mechanical components requiring tight tolerances.
In terms of strength, the 2007 T3510 alloy offers medium-to-high tensile and yield strength values. However, its corrosion resistance is more limited compared to 5xxx or 6xxx series aluminum alloys due to its copper content. For this reason, protective surface treatments such as coating or anodizing are commonly used in outdoor environments. For example, 6061 alloy provides better corrosion resistance and weldability, while 2024 alloy offers higher strength but does not achieve the same level of machinability as 2007.
Regarding machinability, 2007 alloy is among the best-performing aluminum alloys. Chip breaking is easy and stable results can be achieved at high cutting speeds. Because of these characteristics, it is widely used in automotive components, precision machinery, fasteners, and automatic screw machine parts. In contrast, 7075 alloy provides higher strength but is not as advantageous as 2007 in terms of machinability and chip control.
In terms of bending and forming properties, 2007 T3510 alloy has limited ductility and, similar to other high-strength Al-Cu alloys, its cold forming capability is relatively restricted. For this reason, machining processes are usually preferred over complex forming operations. Its weldability is poor, and mechanical fastening or riveting is often used instead. In comparison, 5083 alloy is known for its excellent weldability and superior corrosion resistance, although its strength is lower than that of 2007.
From the perspective of vibration response and coating capability, 2007 alloy allows good surface finishes and is suitable for surface treatments and coatings. However, due to its high copper content, color variations may occur during anodizing. The alloy provides sufficient mechanical strength for components exposed to vibration, which is why it is used in aerospace auxiliary equipment, machine parts, gear components, and precision fasteners. With these characteristics, 2007 T3510 is an important engineering alloy for industrial applications where high machinability and stable mechanical performance are required.
